Christmas and The New Year

We have now been in Sydney for 3 months. Holland has a new job which lets him work from home and he also has some freelance work he does in the evenings. Becky is still temping at Meat and Livestock Australia which is dull but pays the rent. Holland had his first brush with the fabulous Australia fauna, when during a trip to the local beach he was stung by a bluebottle jellyfish (also known as a Portuguese Man of War) resulting in large welts appearing on his skin! Thankfully they receded within half an hour and he bravely claims the stinging was only as bad as a stinging nettle.

We have just had a lovely three weeks with Holland’s Mum Tina and her husband Magnus who braved the extremely long flight from England to come and see us. Their visit gave us the opportunity to do many of the touristy things in Sydney we hadn’t previously had a chance to. Their ‘itinerary’ included a trip to see England vs Australia at the cricket, a boat trip under the Harbour Bridge, a trip to Darling Harbour and the Paddy markets, a meal at the sky tower with awesome 360 degree views of Sydney and on their last night a trip to the Opera house to watch a performance of the beetles white album with a 12 piece band.

We spent Christmas week in Nelson bay, a stunning coastal area with long white beaches about 3 hours north of Sydney with 8 members of Holland’s family. It was really nice to have a big family Christmas. We spent most of the week exploring and even though it rained for a couple of days we had plenty of sunny days to see the many beaches and parks in the area and have a few BBQs.

Tina and Magnus spent 3 nights, including New Years Eve, in the Blue Mountains, a beautiful forested area about 2 hours west of Sydney. They are actually blue because of all the eucalyptus trees in the area giving off oil that refracts in the sunlight. We joined them on their last day to explore some massive crystal caves and Tina and Magnus saw their first wild kangaroos. We definitely plan to go back and spend more time camping up there.

Compared to our relaxing Christmas, New years was totally manic! We went to see the harbour bridge fireworks but couldn’t anywhere near the Opera house as there were so many people; they sealed ‘the zone’ off by 6pm. We packed into another ‘zone’ on the other side of the quay and even there we couldn’t move for arms and legs of strangers. Becky went to the toilet which was 25 meters away and it took an hour for her to move through the crowd and get back. However it was worth it as the fireworks were fantastic, dazzling from the bridge and exploding from the roof of every building nearby and we even managed to sneak a bottle of champagne into the proceedings which made us care a little less about the crowds.
